Vilalte

Vilalte is situated in a very natural environment, where you can choose to be alone in nature, while still having lots of possibilities for interesting tourist excursions.

Whether you just walk around Vilalte, the road is 2 kms away, or make short or longer walks, you will find yourself in varied and fascinating nature with it's enormous granite rocks, mountain streams, waterfalls, friendly meadows, ancient oaks, and magnificent views.

There is a good chance you will see mountain goats, deer, wild pigs or other wild animals, especially early in the morning. You will surely meet the herds of sheep, cows and horses that the farmers let walk freely in summer. There are many owls and other birds of prey, including eagles.

The highest mountain in the region is the Canigou (2783 m. altitude). From Vilalte you can easily find the GR10, 300 m. from the house, which will take you from the south side in a day to the trail that leads to the peak. Those who are more experienced can pass over a trail that leads almost all the time over the mountain ridge via Col de la Cirère, the Gallinasse, Roc Nègre and Puy Sec.

You can also drive with the car to the north side of the Canigou until you reach the refuge and walk from there up to the peak.

There are several refuges' (huts and a hotel) where you can sleep, one at the feet of the Canigou. From there it is an easy walk of 3 hours towards the summit, with its marvellous 360° view: east towards the sea, north and south you see the two valleys and to the west you look deeper into the Pyrenees. For a bit of a change, you can visit idyllic mountain villages like Corsavy (20 minutes by car or one and a half hour walk through the forest), Montferrer or St. Laurens. There are summer festivities, in places such as Arles sur Tech and Céret.

Amélie les Bains has natural hot baths, rich with sulphur. In Corsavy and in Arles sur Tech you find a swimming pool and tennis court. Amélie les Bains has a small golf course.

Céret is a friendly and artistic village. The painters Picasso and Dali used to come here regularly, to meet with a circle of other artists, (as well as in Collioure, and Cadaquès in Spain which also have an artistic atmosphere). There is a museum for modern art in Céret, and it has a pleasant and popular market on Saturday mornings.

In the direct surroundings there are possibilities for horse riding, para-pente (hang gliding) and mountain biking.

A little further away you can swim and adventure in the Gorges de Calamus where you can visit the hermitage of monks in the caves. Other excursions in this interesting region are to Tautavel (prehistoric man), the area where the Cathares lived in the middle ages (castles in ruins on impressive spots), the different animal parks. And there is so much more to discover...

The Mediterranean Sea

"La Grande Bleue" (the Big Blue as the French call her) isn't far away either: 40 km as the crow flies (you can see the sea when you walk the trail up behind Vilalte) or 60 km via the road.

North of the touristy village Argelès you will find long sandy beaches, south of Port Vendres are small and rocky beaches and the lively fishing villages Collioure, Banyuls and Cerbère.

Cadaquès in Spain is a little bit further south; it has sandy beaches and is the birthplace of Salvador Dali. More inland lies the town Figuéras with its busy markets and the Dali Museum. You can also reach this town via mountain roads (St. Laurens de Cerdans).

The silence, the beauty and the breathtaking view on the mountains on the other side of the valley invite to let go of our stress, activities and securities and to feel the joy and peace, which is present deep inside of us. The big mirror of Nature gives us the opportunity to loose ourselves and find us back on a deeper level. Maybe a more natural, more wild, more real self surfaces when we let us touch by the old oaks, when we have permitted into ourselves the water of the wild mountain streams and the enormous rocks which reach to the skies.
